For the Love of Something
"For the Love of Something" in Hidden Stories - an illustrated collection of specially-commissioned works. The book is a literary exploration of people’s relationship with post-industrial places - a new collection of writing inspired by Leicester's Cultural Quarter and the mills of Glossop.
The idea behind the play was triggered by a story my mother told me about her first day at work not long after she had come over from Pakistan to marry my dad. She was very young and very self-conscious about her lack of English. On her first day at work, she was befriended by a kind English woman who told her that she'd look out for her explaining that the foreman would be along later to speak with her. All fine of course, except my mum heard \"four men\". She spent the whole day fretting about four men turning up to interrogate her about the job. When at the end of the day, the foreman finally arrived, she was relieved, but also perplexed as to where the other three men were and spent the time looking over his shoulder in case they appeared!Buy the book
